Are You Ready For A New General Election?

"The gates of parliamentary hell are open" is the headline of an article in today's i newspaper.  Nigel Morris, the Political Editor, discusses the Brexit "Great Repeal Bill" published yesterday.

Nigel makes several observations:
  • Labour is committed to Brexit, but has set down six red lines before the Tories can count on Labour support
  • The LibDems have promised "hell" in terms of the tactics they could employ to delay or destroy the Bill
  • The Scots and Welsh have threatened to veto the Bill
  • Conservative "remainer" MPs keen to water down the Bill, who are already having talks with MPs of other parties (under the auspices of the "All-Party Parliamentary Group on EU Relations")
  • The likelihood of countless amendments to the Bill that could bring Parliament to a virtual halt, and with all the votes involved, potentially lead to the Government losing a key vote
  • Apart from the Commons, there is likely to be even fiercer challenge from the Lords
  • There are another seven Bills relating to Brexit that will face similar problems
To get the Brexit legislation through against Tory rebels, it is now clear why Theresa May wanted and indeed needed a greater majority than she had in March. In that context the June General Election was an obvious choice. She probably thought the risk of a smaller majority was miniscule.  But that is exactly what has happened.

So what next?  We have to assume that the Government will stumble sooner or later, and will be forced to hold another General Election.  Labour are already campaigning in marginal seats where there is a Tory MP with a high public profile.

The Just Party is ready to stand candidates across the country on a #StopBrexit centrist ticket:
In the national interest!

  1. Hello,
#StopBrexit suffers in much the same way as:
"When did you stop beating your wife?"
It presupposes that there ever was a Brexit to stop.
Plainly; Those who acknowledge 'the' Brexit are the only ones going about stopping it - every bit as much as they appear to be getting on with it.
'We' - on the other hand, hanker after/insist upon that which admits of no such thing as Brexit. 'We' campaign to Remain;the only ones (perhaps) ever to have done so. Leastwise, this is how it should be.
Moreover [as I feel I'm not being 'obtuse' enough] 'Remain' itself will not do.

We must - repeat;MUST, campaign for an actual positive relationship with the EU and our fellow member states.
Clearly, this differs a very great deal from the condition we would have 'remained' in had 'Leave' not crossed some imaginary line ahead of us.
I'm sure we all appreciate that there was no pro-EU campaign in 2016. The 'glory' of Brexit is that it now affords us the opportunity to 'reveal' the concrete advantages of EU Membership, for - with each passing day, its wonders bob to the surface.

    So much for the EU.

I, for one, am none too sure that Brexit has all that much to do with the EU:This is why ALL the emerging advantages find little or no traction within Parliament - especially with Party Leaders;Corbyn & May.
The debasement of our Democracy (if any can think that far back?):The Ref debate, the law enacted, the 'bait & switch' tactic of the Cameron Government, the 'surprising' acceptance of a 'result' & the further acceptance of its permanent & unchallengeable character: All offer fertile ground for our campaign too.

I'll leave it there for the present.
Many thanks for reading & commenting.
